Dominicans: the Order of Preachers

Welcome to web site of the English Province of the Friars of the Order of Preachers. We are a religious order of men in the Catholic Church, and, together with our brothers and sisters in the Dominican Family, are often called "Dominicans" after our founder St Dominic.

Our friars are bound together by vow, dedicating themselves to the preaching of the gospel. We prepare ourselves for this work by study and prayer, so that we can pass on the fruits of contemplation. We live together in priories, and our prayer, study and preaching is seen not just as an individual's task, but as the work of the whole community.

The English Province has communities of friars in a seven cities in England and in Scotland. As well as those in full-time studies, we have friars working as lecturers, writers, parish priests and chaplains to universities, prisons, hospitals and schools. While most friars are ordained priests, the order also includes non-ordained brothers.

We hope you will explore this site and learn more about our way of life and our work in the Church.
