The mystery of the Incarnation tells a story of impossible contradictions: God becoming man, eternity under the bondages of the time, perfection manifested in a limited creature, etc. That the Son, the second person of the mysterious Trinity of God, becomes man entails a renewal of the image of creation, a new stage in the artistic process in which God holds History. Like a kind of self-portrait, the creature turns now to be the Creator, the painting to be the painter and that is something that requires much more that simple human reason to grasp. Read more

Solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today’s solemnity might be thought of as the original feminist feast day: for today we celebrate the Solemnity of St Joseph, but we do so by reference to his being ‘the Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary’. In fact, St Joseph’s whole life is defined by his relation to others. He is the earthly father of Jesus, and the husband of Mary, and we celebrate him today for his fidelity and courage in fulfilling his obligations to each of them. He is a great counter-witness to modern obsessions with autonomy. He did not realise himself in being free from obligations to others, but in lovingly fulfilling them. Read more

Who are you? Who do you belong to? Who do you really trust? These are just some of the questions posed by today’s readings. For many of us the answers may roll off the tongue quickly: a child of God, God, and God again. However, Lent invites us to ask various additional questions of ourselves: ‘But, do I really live like that? Is there a gap between what I profess and how I live? Am I afraid that giving myself over entirely to God might diminish me in some way? Do I keep a part of me back from God? Am I only giving myself provisionally to God? For me, at least, the answers become less comfortable at this point, and I’m grateful that the Church invites us into this period of preparation for not just Easter, but ultimately, our Day of Judgment.
