Dominican Pilgrimages

Lourdes
The pilgrimage of Lourdes is founded on the apparitions of the Blessed
Virgin to a poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubiroux. The
first apparition occurred 11 February, 1858. There were eighteen in
all; the last took place 16 July, of the same year.
Every
year members of the English Province of the Dominican family, friars, sisters, laity, and their
friends make a pilgrimage to Lourdes to pray, take part in the
liturgical life of the shrine and to listen to spiritual conferences
designed to deepen our knowledge of the Word of God. In 2006 we shall be travelling from two centres:
Stansted and Newcastle airports, departing on the 4th August and
returning on 11th August. During this pilgrimage we shall have the
special joy of celebrating Mass in the Grotto on the Feast of Saint Dominic, 8th August.
The cost from Stansted is £495 per person shared
room, full board, travel insurance (£15 per night single supplement—limited
availability)
The cost from Newcastle Airport is £557 per person shared
room, full board, travel insurance (£15 per night single supplement—limited
availability)

Walsingham
Walsingham, in north Norfolk has been a place of pilgrimage since
medieval times, when travel to Rome and Compostella was virtually
impossible. The original Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, founded in
1061, was destroyed at the Reformation. Many barren years passed
until the Slipper Chapel, a 14th century wayside pilgrim chapel, was
restored and pilgrimage to Walsingham began once more. In 1934,
the English Bishops named the Slipper Chapel the Roman Catholic
National Shrine of Our Lady.
This year the Dominican Pilgrimage to Walsingham will take place on
Sunday 21st May. Further details are available form Fr Leo Edgar
