On Sunday 13th October, St John Henry Newman was canonised by Pope Francis. Brothers Pablo and Bede flew to Rome to attend the ceremony, where they were present with Dominican brothers and priests both of the English province and from around the world, and many others besides.
The previous day, they had joined at a day conference to mark the event, organised by the Thomistic Institute at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), with the title, “Newman the Prophet: A Saint for our Times”. Among the speakers were Archbishops Bernard Longley (of Birmingham) and Antony Fisher OP (of Sydney), and Professors Tracey Rowland and George Weigel. The topics discussed included Newman’s ideas about university education, conscience and religious belief.
As a man whose most formative years were spent in Oxford, and as an example of a Christian pastor and scholar, St John Henry is a fitting intercessor for the Dominican student brothers. May he pray for us!
