Trinity Sunday
What is the point of the covenant God makes with his people? In other words, who is God to love his people in the way he chooses to love us? Some would argue that the question is devoid of interest because God remains a mystery, and there is no point in knowing why God is like he is and does what he does. After all, God is God and we can live quietly on earth with or without him.
But if we try to look deeper into this covenant and understand who God is, we shall find Moses saying to the Israelites: Put this question to the ages that are past, that went before you, from the time God created man on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? (Dt 4:32). And he goes on saying: Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: the Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth beneath, he and no other (Dt 4:39).
Indeed, God is the unique God, far beyond the reality of our world. In particular, we celebrate him today in his Holy Trinity. We acknowledge that he, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, is perfect, self-consistent, all-powerful, majestic, eternal etc… All these attributes might not help us to understand the love of God for his people. Yet, in his perfection, God the Father, the creator of man on earth, sent God his Son. The Son was found in human form and, being raised from the dead, he received from the Father all authority. By this authority, the Son has permitted that we, human beings, be conformed to his Son and share in his own perfection and in his life everlasting. And God has sent to us the Spirit, the Spirit of Son that makes us call God our Father and share his glory. As St Paul says, we are heirs of God and co-heirs with the Son (Rm 8:17).
It seems that the point of the love of God is that the way God loves us and makes a covenant with us is the way God really is. The unique God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit and makes themselves known to us by the love each one, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, manifest to us. St John affirms that God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them (1Jn 4:16). It is in fact not possible to live without God, because all that we are now and are called to be tomorrow comes from the mystery of God itself, the Holy Trinity which is love. From the Trinity, we receive life and care and flourish in the infinite and ever given love of God.
