Beyond Caravaggio exhibition

I recently visited the Beyond Caravaggio exhibition in the National Gallery in London. One of the paintings which struck me was this painting of the supper at Emmaus. Notice the basket of apples and fruit which looks like it is about to fall off the table. Are we to push the basket back in, perhaps even pull up a chair to sit beside Jesus? When Jesus speaks of his yoke easy and burden light, this is sometimes as simple as responding to an invitation to catch the basket, to grow in our own sanctity. The apples may be rotten at this table, but the chicken, bread and wine that Jesus is blessing look quite nourishing.
