800 years in Britain: Timetable Set for Celebrations
The Dominicans in Britain have agreed a timetable framework for the celebrations that will mark the 800th anniversary of their first arrival in Britain.
Owing to the many restrictions on gathering currently in place and expected to continue until Spring 2021, it has been decided to begin the celebratory year in the run-up to Pentecost 2021. Events will then run through the 800th anniversary, on 15 August, 2021, of the friars’ first arrival in Oxford, through to Pentecost 2022. The celebratory year will culminate in a visit from the Master of the worldwide Order of Preachers, Fr Gerard Timoner OP.
As well as a series of public talks and celebratory liturgies, plans are being laid for a walking pilgrimage from Canterbury to Oxford, conferences, exhibitions, publications, and musical compositions. Each of our priories is developing its own plans, so anyone wishing to get involved should get in touch with their local prior; likewise with congregations of sisters and Lay Dominican chapters.
