
‘The Dominican Order and the Teaching of the Sciences’: Albertus Institute Lecture Series in Edinburgh
To celebrate 800 years since the papal bull declaring the foundation of the Dominican Order by Pope Honorius III, the Albertus Institute, Edinburgh, will be holding a series of three evening talks this autumn. Entitled ‘The Dominican Order and the Teaching of the Sciences’, the series will consider the Order’s influence in this area.
Dr Sara Parvis will chair the lectures. Dr Parvis is a Senior Lecturer in Early Church History at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh.
The first lecture, entitled ‘Making something out of “a whole lot of nothing”: the Dominican approach to teaching philosophy‘, will be given by Rev Dr John O’Connor OP, on Monday 26 September 2016. Fr John is a member of the Dominican Community in Edinburgh, the Assistant Editor of New Blackfriars Journal and a Director of the Albertus Institute.
Rev Dr Peter Hunter OP, philosophy tutor at Blackfriars Hall & the Dominican Studium, Oxford, will give the second of the lectures, entitled ‘Science before Galileo? Early Dominican Physics‘, on Monday 3 October 2016.
The third and final lecture will be held on Monday 7 November 2016. The lecture entitled ‘“God is not a thing!”: Science and religion debates among young Catholics today‘, will be given by Mr Michael O’Duffin, who is a member of the Glasgow Lay Dominicans.
- All lectures start at 7pm and will be held at the Garden Room, St. Albert’s Catholic Chaplaincy, Edinburgh.
- Tea and coffee will be available after the talk and questions.
