Journey through Lent with the Psalms

Journey through Lent with the Psalms

This Lent, join Fr Richard Ounsworth OP for a series on the Psalms.

In Mass there is one book of the Bible that we read more than any other, and yet it is the one that is perhaps mentioned least from the pulpit. This is, of course, the Book of Psalms. These sacred songs form the basis of our liturgy, and are the living heartbeat of the Church’s prayer. Their powerful words cover almost every imaginable human emotion: from laments and dirges, and pleas for forgiveness, to hymns of praise and thanksgiving and jubilation. They are also deeply theological, and since the time of early Church have been read as a synthesis of God’s revelation.

In this series for Lent, Fr Richard will comment on each of the psalms chosen for the readings at Mass on the Sundays of Lent. In the lectionary of the Mass, the psalm is always selected as a response to the reading it follows, namely the first reading. This series will provide the opportunity to explore themes such as sin and temptation, Baptism and redemption, and the freedom of the children of God.

Very much looking forward to hearing Richard’s reflections on the Psalm. I’m sure I am not the only one at Blackfriars who misses hie sermons.

Thank you for the opportunity to join Richard and to reflect upon the Psalms during Lent.
May our Blessed Lord open our hearts, that our ears may hear and our eyes may see our Saviour’s loving invitation—drawing us ever deeper into the mystery of His Passion and the sacrifice of the Cross. ✝️

Thank you in advance for this offering. I was blessed by Fr Ounsworth’s online preaching today, Ash Wednesday, at word.op.org, and so I was very pleasantly surprised to see that he would be the one offering this series. I too have felt that the Psalms are a somewhat of a synthesis of God’s revelation as was mentioned in the synopsis. The Psalms have been my daily mediation for over fifty years now. Each of them are unique and have their own radiance like the stars in heaven. I am a lay Dominican in the United States.
