Dominican Forum

Free lunchtime discussions on Christianity

Season 12 – Autumn 2022

The Dominican Forum is back, with 2 online sessions and 1 in-person lunch meeting, hosted by CCLA.

Webinar 1: Fr David Goodill OP –
Transhumanism: ‘Can we improve on God’s design?

Held on Wednesday, 12 October 2022, 12.30pm (UK time), recording available

Transhumanism is a modern movement that seeks to ‘upgrade’ humans, including through genetic modification or creating electronic interfaces with our brains or bodies. However, is it blasphemous to attempt to improve on God’s creation, which he declared ‘good’? Is it even wise? To what extent are we free to see our bodies as a blank canvas or a raw material to be altered according to our own whims?

Webinar 2: Fr Toby Lees OP –
‘Should we baptise E.T.?’

Wednesday, 16 November 2022 , 12.30pm (UK time)

If intelligent extra-terrestrial life exists, how should Christians treat it? Would we need to preach salvation to aliens? Could we welcome them into the Church? The truth is out there…

In-person lunch event! 3: Fr Richard Ounsworth OP –
‘Does the Church still prohibit usury?’

CHANGE OF DATE: Wednesday, 1 March 2023, 12.30pm – 2.00pm (UK time)
*The planned rail strikes on 14 December and 1 February required us to postpone this session twice.

Location: CCLA, One Angel Lane, London EC4R 3AB

Usury has a complicated history and laws against it did much to shape the society and economy of medieval Christendom. Are Christians still forbidden from charging interest on loans? Where did this prohibition originate, and what is its status today?

Join us for our first in-person event since lockdown! Free lunch, all welcome, places limited.

Recordings of previous webinars are available on Facebook.

COMMUNICATIONS

News. If you want to receive news mailings from us, you must opt in to one of our mailing lists. You can do this via our website.

Appeals. We may wish to send you occasional fundraising communications by post. You are free to get these by email instead, or to opt out altogether by selecting one of the options below.

RESEARCH WE UNDERTAKE

We research our contacts to discover those who may have the ability to offer larger gifts, using public-domain sources (e.g. internet searches). Sometimes we may use a secure third-party research service to develop our understanding of those we suspect of falling into this group: their interests, financial capacity, social networks, philanthropy. This information makes it more likely that our fundraising approaches will be welcomed and appropriate.

About the Dominican Friars

* The Dominican Friars are a religious order in the Catholic church. They specialise in the intellectual apostolate, and their high level of training allows them to engage and debate with a wide range of viewpoints and at many levels. As the ‘Order of Preachers’ they have a strong tradition of engaging preaching and are much sought-after as speakers. Also known as the ‘Blackfriars’, the area of the same name in London is called after the great Dominican priory which once stood there.
